From time to time I get thinking about what makes for appropriate content in a kids’ movie or film. What defines a “kids’ movie” or what makes for “family-friendly” entertainment. I find that the answer to that question to be very ambiguous, and entirely subjective to personal preference. What was “family-friendly” back when our parents were growing up is completely different than what passes as entertainment for our children now. (more…)

Choosing Good Family Movies to Watch, Part 2
Friday, September 23rd, 2011 -
In a previous blog post, I set out a premise for how to choose good family movies. The final point in that brief introduction to the topic was that we can choose to be choosy in our movie watching habits. To continue with this series, I’ve felt it appropriate to present an article that was published by one of my university professors now ten years ago. The advice is sound and still as applicable today as it was 10 years ago. Perhaps even more so now! (more…)
Morally Active Movie Producers
Monday, September 19th, 2011 -
I submit that the happiest men and women engaged in the movie making process are those that are morally active, or conscientious, in their approach to movie and media production. The news reporter in the field, the video editor in the bay, the storyboard artist at her desk, the screen writer at his computer — each has a moral obligation to fulfill in the creation of their work. Those who can acknowledge and recognize this responsibility add a layer of empowerment to their work and will begin to depict possibilities and situations that are scarcely imaginable. (more…)
Moral Leadership in Filmmaking
Monday, September 12th, 2011 -
I opened up a journal from 2008 last evening. I was reminded of some of my notes about moral leadership in filmmaking. This morning, I’m reviewing a couple of old posts from back in the same time period. The principles declared therein have weighed themselves upon my mind again this morning. Here’s what a few years’ perspective brings to the table. (more…)
Why We Need to Teach Our Students Movie Making
Thursday, September 8th, 2011 -
The media landscape into which our children are being brought up is vastly different from any other generation of children, even including my own generation (which was only 20 years ago). Is our education system reforming quick enough prepare our children for where they are going? (more…)

Media Literacy – Henry Jenkins, Former MIT Director of Comparative Media Studies
Friday, August 26th, 2011 -
This video is a few years dated at this point (2008), but offers a interesting perspective about approach children, especially teens, using media (video/Internet) as creators.
Towards the end of the video, Professor Jenkins suggests that the way that we get children to become more aware of the media that they are consuming is to allow them to become creators or producers of media themselves. He goes on to then explain that once they know how to create, we can then begin to teach them to think critically about what they are consuming.
Netflix Reviews for Children’s Films
Thursday, August 25th, 2011 -
We had an experience in our home yesterday that gave me pause for reflection. Our three-year-old son just got done watching a video for an hour because my wife needed a nap. Afterwards, my wife informed me that he didn’t like what he was watching, but he watched it anyways. Why? From our observations, children will watch almost anything. (more…)
On Viewing Good Movies – A Response to the BBC’s Director General
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 -
So about a week ago, I posted a YouTube video of Mark Thompson, the BBC Director General, offering remarks to Coventry University on the question of moral media, and whether the bulk of the content of the BBC was moral or not. While I cannot go into a detailed review of Mr. Thompson’s remarks, there are two points that I wish to address, one I agree very strongly with, and the other I half agree with. (more…)
BBC’s Director General on Moral Media (Good Entertainement)
Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 -
Today, I share this video as a framework for future discussions. I do not agree with the Director General’s concluding point, because it is a passive approach to media creation. Yet, there are some fascinating observations made throughout his remarks that I’d like to address in future posts.
