Thanks for your comment, M Stroud. That's a good point! Senior missionaries don't have nearly the limitation that the young elders do, but they do get sent all around the world, which unfortunately puts them outside the traditional loops of distribution. "17 Miracles" is hopefully just a first step for Deseret Book with film making. I know that they've struggled for several years now just to get a good (defined: broad appeal to an LDS audience) film produced. I'm sure online distribution will become even more a of a demand/reality as things move forward.

Thanks for commenting!

Thanks Randy for your thoughts. Perhaps my post was a tad too dark, or hopeless. Maybe not, but I am amazed even still at how the Lord is able to build bridges where I can only see voids and short comings.

Know how you feel (only two kids but an income of $0) and I hope things are looking up since you wrote this. The problem goes beyond the recession and Church members to encompass how the entire film industry is structured, especially since the breakdown of the studios, but I think it's enhanced by both the financial crisis and, often, Church members' expectation for artists to "consecrate" their work, by which they mean "donate." I agree that it's important to face toward Zion and create work that, to the best of our knowledge and ability, will help build it up, and I think that's what consecration means for an artist. Under a true United Order, of course, they would be compensated for that.

On a broader level, of course, the Lord's promised us all, not just artists, that he will provide for us like the lilies of the field or Israelites receiving just enough manna to get by day to day. I'll admit that sometimes it's hard to see how that's accomplished, though.

Some really good thoughts here, Brent, and I'm sorry I'm so late catching up with this post. It's nice to consider these issues--how we can be morally engaged with our work, regardless of its overt content, and what does it really mean to be an active "pro-creative" artist. I suppose that variations enter the picture when you get into specifics; everyone's opinion of what constitutes absolute (meaning platonic, eternal, not-relative) morality is, even within the same faith tradition. I'd love to hear any examples of yours that you find to be truly moral films, or filmmakers. Some of mine include films that a lot of my religious friends might not include but which I, as a religious person, find to be highly moral and edifying (25th Hour & Blue Valentine, for instance).

I think that you'll be happy to see that we use resources like the standards for 21st Century Skills(PDF).

The other exciting development is that we're moving towards using the Common Core Standards(PDF) in Arizona for Math and English. In the standards for English, check out this paragraph:

"Students employ technology thoughtfully to enhance their reading, writing,
speaking, listening, and language use. They tailor their searches online to
acquire useful information efficiently, and they integrate what they learn using
technology with what they learn offline. They are familiar with the strengths and
limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select and use
those best suited to their communication goals."

That last sentence is what you're looking for.

A fair question. I'm responsible for all the images featured on ColoringPageKids.com. I've a close friend who's contributed to a few sections, notably the U.S. Presidents and the animals sections. I've drawn the rest of them by hand. I guess that does make our website unique from most coloring pages websites out there. Thanks for asking.
