WordPress and HTML 5
As the world wide web continues to evolve, a valid consideration for anyone looking into setting up a website in WordPress is whether or not WordPress supports HTML 5.
What is HTML 5?
At the core of ever webpage is the basic language of the Internet: HTML. It stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It has been around in one form or another for more than twenty years. HTML 4 and XHTML 1 had been around for the last ten years, making it the backbone of the modern web. But much has changed in the way that we’ve used the Internet over the past ten years, from a strictly presentational format to a much more software-like experience and thus the evolution to HTML 5.
Does my website need to be built using HTML5?
It is always good practice to be using the latest in web technologies, as long as it is generally supported by the majority of users, which is the case with HTML 5. Issues such as search engine optimization (SEO) and website accessibility (Can users with disabilities access your website? – 10% of internet users) are not greatly affected by whether or not your site is using HTML5. However a web developer who is not versed and familiar in the most current web standards is probably most likely not going to care about or understand other important details (such as SEO and accessibility) for your website either.
Does WordPress use HTML 5?
WordPress is a software solution that is completely separate from how each website owner chooses to present their website’s information. The way in which the website’s information is presented is controlled in WordPress by its template. That is where you will find HTML being employed. The WordPress team has been using HTML5 with its default templates for several years now. Ultimately, it is best to find a template or a template developer who will also use HTML 5 in their work as WordPress is designed to create content that is coded using HTML 5.
